Fireproof or burglar-proof: how not to make a mistake when choosing a safe for your home?
Choosing a safe for a private home is always about finding a balance between price and real level of protection. There are many models on the market, but most buyers get lost in the specifications: S1, S2, LFS 30 P. What does this mean for the safety of your savings?Let's understand the "golden mean" of security systems, without delving into complex banking standards that are usually not needed in an ordinary apartment or a country house.
What is the main difference: "Thermos" or "Fortress"?
The first thing to understand: fire protection and burglary protection are completely different technologies and materials. Let's consider how the "sandwich" of fire protection works in a safe with the characteristics of LFS 30P or LFS 60P.
The task of such a safe is to prevent securities or cash from charring during a fire. The popular LFS 30P standard guarantees that within 30 minutes of the safe being in a fire, the temperature inside will not rise above the critical 170°C.
The secret lies in the multilayer construction of the case. There is a special protective layer between the outer and inner steel walls. Depending on the model, manufacturers use different materials:
- Refractory concrete is a traditional filler, which, due to its mass and low thermal conductivity, creates a powerful temperature barrier.
- Gypsum boards, which contain chemically bound water, which, when heated, is released as steam, actively cooling the inner chamber of the safe.
- Vermiculite and ceramic fiber are modern lightweight insulators that withstand extreme temperatures and work on the principle of a high-tech thermos.
Safes with burglary resistance classes S1, S2, 0, 1 and higher are already a "fortress" designed to withstand drills, grinders and crowbars. If a fire-resistant safe is a "thermos", then burglary-resistant is primarily the strength of steel, the complexity of locks and resistance to tools.
In Ukraine, these parameters are regulated by European standards, which determine how much effort and time an attacker will need to break in.
1. Standard EN 14450 (DSTU EN 14450) These are the most popular household-level safes for apartments, private houses and small offices. They are designed to protect against an "accidental" attacker with a basic tool.
- Class S1 is a basic level, which is optimal for storing documents, personal weapons or small amounts of money. Such models are often used as weapons or compact "under the bed" safes.
- Class S2 is an advanced level that provides for a more reliable bolt system and a reinforced case design. Safes with protection class S2 form the same optimal "golden mean" for a home where you need to protect valuables and family savings.
- Class 0 (H0) and Class 1 are the initial classes of the professional line. They are much more massive and reliable. If you plan to store significant amounts of money or expensive jewelry, keep in mind that insurance companies often require a certificate of this standard.
- Classes from II to XIII: These are highly reliable safes, which are usually used in banking and financial institutions or in jewelry stores.
Combined protection: when you need everything at once
For those who want to protect their property from both elements — fire and theft — there are fire and burglary-resistant safes. These are hybrid models certified according to both standards (for example, LFS 30P fire resistance combined with S2 burglary resistance). In such safes, manufacturers combine different fillers: for example, reinforced high-strength concrete for protection against drilling and fire-resistant layers with thermal tape for fire protection. This makes the safe heavier and more expensive, but provides complete peace of mind — your valuables are protected from any scenario. When choosing a safe, we suggest focusing on the main risk:
- For paper archives, fire resistance is the priority.
- For valuables and weapons in a secured room — classes S1 or S2.
- For maximum peace of mind in a private home, choose class 1 burglary resistance with basic fire protection.
